| Diminishing fossil fuel reserves, growing demand for renewable energy and chemical products and our society's dependence on non-renewable resources, such as petroleum, have spurred the demand to find an alternate for petrochemicals. Furan derivatives obtained from renewable biomass such as forest and crop waste, have the potential to replace petroleum based chemical products and fuels. These derivatives can be synthesized using ruthenium based catalyst either immobilized on ionic liquids or in conjunction with them. 'Ionic liquids' are promising new class of solvent that can be used in different organic reactions due to their recyclability, non-inflammability and non-volatile nature; and hence can replace the classical toxic, volatile and flammable solvents used presently. | |
